http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/AardvarkMidtermReport.html skip down to 'The Conference' "For some reason, a long long time ago, I had agreed to give the keynote speech for CFUNITED, a conference about ColdFusion. "I never used ColdFusion!" I protested. "Don't worry. Nobody has. The biggest sponsor of this conference is Microsoft, who have a huge presence trying to get the ColdFusion developers to switch to VB.NET," the organizers told me." curious who those 'organizers' were.  I can't imagine that coming from anybody at Teratech. -- Charlie Griefer ================================================ "...All the world shall be your enemy, Prince with a Thousand Enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with a swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed."

I read the thing, and was at CFUnited. M$ did have a large presence there and were giving out a lot of stuff. Every attendee got an ASP.Net book in his pack. larry ----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more -----

it wasn't that part that surprised me.  when i first heard that MS was going to be there, I assumed it was for 'recruitment' purposes. what surprised me more was that an 'organizer' of a CF conference allegedly made the statement that "nobody does [use coldfusion]". ----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more -----

I'd be willing to bet this was simply a misunderstanding. -r ----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more -----

Yes a misunderstanding. I have emailed Joel to ask him to correct the quote. I did *not *say nobody used CF.  I did say that it didn't matter that he hadn't done ColdFusion because he could talk about general software development issues of interest to CF developers (which he did, very successfully according to the attendee surveys). Thanks for bringing this to my attention! :-) - Michael Smith, TeraTech, Inc http://www.teratech.com/    CFUNITED http://www.cfunited.com/ PS If you have suggestions for CFUNITED-06 please email me off list - we are in the middle of the planning process for that now, even though the event is not until June 2006. Heads up we will have the call for speakers in September, so get ready to nominate your favorite speakers and topics! Fusion Authority will have an article up in a few minutes with a quote from Joel covering this. ----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more -----

In my opinion, Joel has a very strong bias toward Microsoft related stuff.  I find it hard to believe that he "misunderstood" so badly that he misquoted something so out in left field and in favor of Microsoft.  His continued comments about iPods and not being able to replace the batteries are at least sloppy and at the worst anti-Apple (http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/HighNotes.html). I am quite sure many people have emailed him to let him know about it, but I am pretty sure he just writes whatever he wants and thinks his audience will buy it. -Cameron ----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more -----

> And the article is up. Rather interesting response from him: > http://www.fusionauthority.com/Community/Article.cfm/ArticleID:4483 yeah, i don't know if i buy the response.  using quotation marks generally implies that you're quoting somebody.  misquoting somebody publicly, and suggesting that it was in jest... I dunno.  seems dangerous, if nothing else. -- Charlie Griefer ================================================ "...All the world shall be your enemy, Prince with a Thousand Enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you.
