The biggest difference between Tomcat and JBoss is that Jboss handles ejb's as well, but uses tomcat as its web app server.

BTW notice that Railo is now a part of JBoss and will be bundled with the app server. Steve Brownlee has some good tutorials on JBoss and CF: http://www.fusioncube.net look at his tutorial on how to set up CF8 on JBoss: http://www.fusioncube.net/?p=94 Getting Started With JBoss: http://docs.jboss.org/jbossas/getting_started/v4/html/ Installing and Configuring JBoss http://today.java.net/pub/a/today/2005/03/01/InstallingJBoss.html JBoss Admin Guide: http://wiki.jboss.org/wiki/JBossAdminGuide The Unofficial JBoss Performance Tuning Guide http://hodgman.info/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=3&sid=126ec1e0062bf631124472aa82e5d16a JBoss on the Mac OSX server: http://developer.apple.com/documentation/WebObjects/Conceptual/J2EE_JavaAppServerGuide/Overview/chapter_2_section_1.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40002323-CH214-BBCBEBGA Virtual Hosts with JBoss http://evolutionnext.com/blog/2005/09/05/1125954329320.html Using mod_jk with JBoss/Tomcat and Apache http://wiki.jboss.org/wiki/UsingMod_jk1.2WithJBoss ----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more -----

JRun is another app server - but most development is stopped for it. Glassfish is another app server. When I get back from the wilds of Tennessee I'll dig up some links for you, but wikipedia is a good place to start. larry ----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more -----

Author: Zaphod Beeblebrox Short Link: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-community/thread.cfm/threadid:26842#261504 Dear CF-Fy I'm really confused about the whole servlet container/application server scenario.  Is Tomcat not the same thing as JBoss and Jrun?  If not, what are the differences.  What should I be starting out with that's easy to administer.  Where does glassfish play into the whole scenario? Thanks Signed, Confused or zB
