Anyone following the LeRoy Twelve Story? Diagnosis:  Mass Hysteria. Bull shit. http://www.wgrz.com/news/article/150087/37/Update-on-Tourettes-Like-Illness-in-Leroy J - I've always thought the right wing was the ones who were inflexible and intolerant, and now I'm coming to realize that the orthodoxy at NPR, if it's representing the Left, is just unbelievable - Juan Williams The government is merely a servant -- merely a temporary servant; it cannot be its prerogative to determine what is right and what is wrong, and decide who is a patriot and who isn't. Its function is to obey orders, not originate them.. - Mark Twain

I watched this story when it first came out (WGRZ is a local station for me) and thought pretty much the same when I saw the story.  It's a case of, "we don't know" itis but the community was demanding answers and there were none to be found. I haven't seen any updates on it since this initial story broke. "I haven't seen any updates on it since this initial story broke." From what I have read, those study the situation would not release any information.  Specifically, the doctors said it would violate HIPAA.  Then one week later, the doctors come out and say it's mass hysteria and that this, apparently, is not a HIPAA violation. One doctor seemed to imply there was pressure from higher ups to not give out any information. Not commenting on the initial story as I don't know anything about it, but as far as the HIPAA stuff goes, you can't disclose information about a particular person using any sort of personally identifying information and anything to do with their medical care. But when you are talking about a group, where you aren't identifying individuals and their medical information, you are now talking about aggregate data and therefore probably not violating HIPAA. So saying "I'm a doctor and have looked at Person A and she's a crazy bitch" is a HIPAA violation. Saying, "I've studied syndrome Y and it is my professional opinion that people who think they have syndrome Y, in general, are probably a bunch of crazy bitches" is not a HIPAA violation. Four more cases added to the mass hysteria. http://news.yahoo.com/four-more-suspected-cases-conversion-disorder-york-town-172100065.html and Erin Brockovich is coming on the scene to contribute http://gma.yahoo.com/parents-demand-further-environmental-investigation-tic-illness-affecting-160457762--abc-news.html and Judah, thanks for the heads up on HIPAA.  I glad you told me since I have been working with this type of data for over 10 years.  You're probably right.  It's perfectly cool for a doctor to say twelve teenage girls are hysterical.  That could never harm them like actually coming out and saying that each girls does not have a specific disease. We seek the social ownership of property, the abolition of the propertied class, and the SOLE CONTROL of those who produce wealth. COMMUNISM is the goal. - Roger Baldwin, founder of the ACLU

Then I hope you are a damn sight more careful in your words and your work in that context than you are here. >You're probably right.  It's perfectly cool for a doctor to say twelve teenage > girls are hysterical.  That could never harm them like actually coming out > and saying that each girls does not have a specific disease. Go back and re-read what I said. It would be inappropriate for a doctor to to comment on these cases. If would be a HIPAA violation to disclose information that could be traced back to identifying individuals. It is not a HIPAA violation to talk about the general nature of a class of disease. HIPAA violation: Judah has the flu and should be quarantined for 2 days as that is the normal period of highest transmissibility. Not HIPAA violation: People with influenza are most contagious for 2 days following the onset of symptoms, so we recommend that they try to avoid contact with individuals during that time period. If you don't understand that distinction, please get the hell out of the medical field. Thanks, Ju

"Then I hope you are a damn sight more careful in your words and your work in that context than you are here." Thanks for your concern. "If you don't understand that distinction, please get the hell out of the medical field." I believe you are missing the point entirely. A doctor came out and told the media that 12 teenage girls where suffering from hysteria.  That is not kosher under any circumstances, especially considering the how teenagers respond to some things.  It is not uncommon for girls who are told their BMI is too high to start bad horrendous dieting patterns.  What are they going to do when people start saying they are crazy (not the same as mass hysteria but not everyone will understand that)? The doctor is probably a shill protecting someone's interest, but not the girls'.
