Well I find myself with a ton of free time and want to start a blog going over the documents that lead to the American revolution, and those that followed. Whats the free blog site out there right now? Something that will let me post images and video, and that gives me a good rich text editor? wordpress.com all of the above, and really good seo let me know, I would love to read it ----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more ----- Will do. If wordpress.com is a registered reseller, they get them 'wholesale' for less than that. After that, they only need to set up the DNS records (if you don't use someone else) and set up the host headers to point to your particular blog. Then, well, they don't have to do anything ever again. They collect a yearly fee for doing absolutely nothing :) At least, that's what I assume they are doing. It's probably automated anyway and they have tools where you get to do any other extra work on your own. > Trying to get intolerable-acts.org. It said something about $17 a year, > but I haven't been asked for my credit card, and that seems awful cheap, so > we'll see. I picked it up, it's just a redirect though :( Wish it was an actual domain. ----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more ----- I am using hostek and they have a wordpress install button to make t pretty easy. My domains are currently at godaddy. Many of the hosts will offer registration services...I just prefer to have the registrations at a third party so I don't have to make as many changes if I move. I used to keep my DNS at godaddy, but I am in the process of switching to freedns as I may be moving off of godaddy if I can find a good registrar. I am not happy with godaddy's political stances these days. I picked it up, it's just a redirect though :( Wish it was an actual domain. ----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more ----- the beauty of wordpress.com is it is a hosting service AND a blogging service AND an seo service. all you do is create an account, and they handle site setup, all software upgrades, and all seo. but, it is a walled garden, and prevents installing your own code or your own plugins (but for a yearly fee does allow any custom css mods you want, and a custom url). the SOFTWARE, though, is OSS, and you can download it and run it on your own server on your own domain. you lose the automatic upgrades, and baked-in seo, but you can add any themes or plugins you want, including ones you make yourself. it is a balancing act between "walled garden" and "run your own". with a host like bluehost.com, they have some control panel features to allow easy upgrades, and you can use wp admin and ftp to install COTS or home-brewed plugins and themes. I personally would suggest spending a little while on wordpress.com. and when you are sure you like it, move your blog to your own host, run wordpress (downloaded from wordpress.org), and change it to your hearts content. and switch the redirects. > > I picked it up, it's just a redirect though :( > > Wish it was an actual domain. > > > I personally would suggest spending a little while on wordpress.com. and > when you are sure you like it, move your blog to your own host, run > wordpress (downloaded from wordpress.org), and change it to your hearts > content. and switch the redirects. I would also suggest you play with messing around in wordpress on some free thing like 000webhost.com before setting it up for reals. They have a c-panel and phpmyadmin, and the database, ftp DNS and web site are all set up automatically in about 5 minutes. I wouldn't use them for anything that needs reliability, but for breaking code and screwing around, they are great. Tim, When you are ready, I'll give you free blog hosting (linux) for as long as I'm alive. :) Let me know. I'll even setup the Wordpress, throw in the plugins that I know are the best for SEO, and even access to some themes if you want. Thank you for your service! :) -E Oh E with a K, you roxor. I only have like 14 fans, I'll tell you what if I ever crack 100 we'll talk :) Thanks hun. ----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more ----- I found Wordpress to be really customizable....and easily customizable.
