There are also a bunch of browser plugins that will change up the interface for
you.

Compact isn't compact enough in many ways but that doesn't matter. I
can apply a custom style sheet over gmails style sheet which will give
me what I want. Remove some of the bothersom borders, shrink some
button text, etc.
We're creators and innovators. If something is not to our liking we
should just modify it ourselves.

Yes I know about the older look and themes, I used a couple of
different ones. However since switching to the new look the theme I
chose (Orca Island) reminds me of Salt Spring Island, back in BC.

the old look had themes? Or are you saying you like the themes for the
new look better?

I've only just switched over to the new look (chose compact as well).
However one thing I do like are the themes, such as Orca Island which
changes colour throughout the day, mimicking they day at such a
location. That is a nice touch.

I felt the same way the first week they rolled it out on my accounts.
I was not a happy camper at all. I ended up, like Maureen, setting it
into Compact mode and that helped ease the pain a bit. It's grown on
me over time to the point where frankly, I don't recall the old
interface or why I initially preferred it. For me it's the same story
between Homesite+ and CF Builder. After using Homesite+ for, gosh, a
decade or so, CF Builder felt evil and wrong and not at all in line
with my workflow. Over time it too grew on me to the point where I
only use Homesite+ where I must and CF Builder is now my default go-to
tool of choice, just as the new Google Mail interface is for my
various e-mail boxes. Give it some time to get used to. I can say
with certainty that I prefer it over anything else I've been forced to
use over the years.

Me too, but I set it to the compact setting which resembles the
original view. Perhaps Mike would like that.

I have been using the web interface for the last year now because I have
to, and really I see no problems with it. maybe because I have been using
it every day for a year I am just used to it or something, I don't know. I
have not heard of anyone else complain about the new interface either.

I've been using the web interface exclusively for both personal and work
email for years now and love it. Change happens. It's a free product.
I'm not complaining.

I agree. If I could switch all of my mail to the gmail interface, I would
do it in a second.

I greatly prefer the new interface.
The button placement, and the activation/deactivation of features
where they can/cannot be used.

I rarely use the web interface, but the little I do use it...it seems fine
to me. I don't think that many people are complaining....you are the first
I have head complaining about it actually....not that I look for people
complaining about google *grin* I download everything into Outlook.

If anything would make me quit using gmail, the new UI is it. The fact that
I can't get the old UI or something as efficient is a pain.
Judith feels the same and from what I hear there are a LOT of others who
agree with us. What moron at Google decided to force this on us.
Do they think that they've gotten so big that people will just take it. I
wonder who will take advantage of all the negative sentiment that Google is
generating.
