SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) Unions representing workers in the northeastern
Pennsylvania city of Scranton expect to file a federal lawsuit against the
city after the mayor abruptly cut their pay tominimum wage.
The attorney for three unions, including firefighters and police, tells The
Times-Tribune of Scranton(http://bit.ly/LEtMXt ) he expects to file several
legal actions, including a motion to hold Mayor Chris Doherty in contempt
of court for violating a judge's order to pay full wages.
Doherty last week cut the pay for about 400 employees to the federal
minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. He says it was the only way for the
cash-strapped city to pay bills, and promises to restore pay once finances
are stabilized.
Doherty is locked in a dispute with Scranton's city council over a
financial recovery plan as it faces a $16.8 million budget deficit.

SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) A judge has ordered the city of Scranton to pay
employees full wages, but the mayor says the cash-strapped government can't
afford it.
Lackawanna County Judge Michael Barrasse on Friday granted an injunction to
unions challenging Mayor Chris Doherty's decision to impose minimum wages to
nearly 400 employees. The Times-Tribune of Scranton reports paychecks
containing the minimum wage of $7.25 an hour had already been issued.
Doherty says he can't print money and that City Council has to fulfill the
obligations of their budget. City Administrator Ryan McGowan says the city
would have only $83,000 available after making a minimum-wage payroll of
$311,000.
Union attorney Thomas Jennings says he will again file a motion seeking to
hold the mayor in contempt of court if paychecks do not contain full wages.
It will be interesting to see how this pans out. Looks like bankruptcy
is imminent which will break those lucrative union contracts.

(03/16/2006) Because this massive of accumulation of debt was predicted,
because it was foreseeable, because it was unnecessary, because it was the
result of willful and reckless disregard for the warnings that were given
and for the fundamentals of economic management, I am voting against a debt
limit increase - Joe Biden
