For the independent developers here, I was looking for some input on your policy on travel rates. This question does not really apply to air/hotel/car rental types of tele-commuting as you would have that pre-defined in your contract. If you need to travel 2.5 hours for a client, spend 3 hours on site, 2.5 hours back, how do you bill that. Do you charge your normal programming rate for the entire time, part of the time, or 5 hours at a travel rate and 3 at a programming rate? My thoughts are that I need a lower travel rate, or maybe charge by the mile. Travel Time is not a controlled cost. I ran into lot of trouble charging (half my rate) for travel time. One day I got stuck in traffic and it took 2 hours to get home instead of 1, for example. Charge your normal rate for the 3 hours on-site and build your travel costs into it. Keep records of your mileage for tax purposes. My CPA tells me you can charge mileage at that rate, but only for actual travel on the clock i.e. you can't charge your mileage for commuting (unless you have a home office you often work from, but even that is apparantly a big "audit me" sign). If you're driving from one client site to another, or going to see your accountant, banker etc. then you can charge the miles. -Stacy --- doug <doug@dwhite.ws> wrote: ______________________________________________________________________ Signup for the Fusion Authority news alert and keep up with the latest news in ColdFusion and related topics. http://www.fusionauthority.com/signup.cfm

Well the way I look at it is...How much is your time worth? I use a flat rate service call fee or whatever you want to call it. Sometimes I may lose a couple of bucks and sometimes I may gain a few, but in the long run it all evens out to where I do not lose $$ Douglas Brown Email: dbrown@socal.rr.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "Stacy McMahon" <stacymcmahon@yahoo.com> To: "CF-Jobs-Talk" <cf-jobs-talk@houseoffusion.com> Sent: Thursday, May 09, 2002 1:15 PM Subject: Re: travel rates ______________________________________________________________________ Signup for the Fusion Authority news alert and keep up with the latest news in ColdFusion and related topics. http://www.fusionauthority.com/signup.cfm

I will accept that as long as your CPA does not work for Andersen consulting. I have a home office and was audited 5 years ago, and the result was a larger refund, as I had been overly conservative with deductions. They have not audited since. I use the service call method as well, plus mileage if the call does not involve an overnight stay, or air travel. for the longer assignments, I use a Per Diem rate, and all travel time is on the clock. Time not traveling and not on the job is not billed to the client. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Stacy McMahon" <stacymcmahon@yahoo.com> To: "CF-Jobs-Talk" <cf-jobs-talk@houseoffusion.com> Sent: Thursday, May 09, 2002 3:15 PM Subject: Re: travel rates My CPA tells me you can charge mileage at that rate, but only for actual travel on the clock i.e. you can't charge your mileage for commuting (unless you have a home office you often work from, but even that is apparantly a big "audit me" sign).
