While we're on the subject of Payment Processing...  Can people make recommendations for the best combination of merchant account and payment processor? I'm probably going to go with a Wells Fargo merchant account and Verisign's Payflow but would like to consider other low cost options that are fairly easy to set up. thanks, -B

While pay pal is probably the best approach without having a merchant account careful about what you use it for, as some people will run into problems.   Biggest problem #1.  Paypal will not accept corporate american express, and they do not say this anywhere on their site and when you try to use this type of card they do not tell you that Coporate AMEX is not a card type they accept they just bomb out with all kinds of errors.  Annoying as hell for the users.   I suggest looking at your user base closely before going to this type of solution. I have had experience with very web savvy people running into all kinds of problems, so if you have casual users then this might be magnified. Otherwise the fees are reasonable and the service is pretty good. Plus the account management tools are very good.   Dan: Look into PayPal.  These guys are probably your best option. Considering SureFire vs PayPal: SureFire: 1. Higher setup cost ($299) 2. Monthly Fee ($35) 3. 2.75% Transaction Fee (For the US) 4. 5% of the Sale is held for 180-days for Chargebacks. 5. Only uses MC and VISA (from what I seen) 6. On a sale of $100: You will receive $91.90 within 2 weeks of the sale and a further $5.00 180 days after the sale. PayPal: Setup FREE Monthly Fee FREE Money is available immediately There is a 2.9% + $0.30 transaction fee So In comparasion on the same $100 purchase: You will get the following back from each: PayPal: $96.80 (Immediately) SureFire: $91.90 (Within 2 weeks) + ($5.00 within 6 months) Just make sure you weigh all your options. Customer Base. Transaction Fees, Monthly fees, as well as Timeframes you can access your $$$ and not to mention friendly usage by your customers. How much does SureFire Commerce Payment Processing cost? Aside from the low setup fee of $299 and a low monthly fee of $35 per account, the cost of this service is minimal. There are no upfront deposits and no minimum monthly volumes to maintain. A discount rate of 2.75% on U.S. dollar transactions or 3.5% on Canadian dollar transactions and a transaction fee of $0.35 apply to each transaction. A rolling reserve of 5% will also apply. Take, for example, a case where the discount rate was 2.75%, the transaction fee was $0.35, and the rolling reserve – held for 180 days to offset the cost of chargebacks – was 5%. On a $100 sale, you would pay $2.75 for the discount rate, $0.35 for the transaction fee, and $5.00 for the rolling reserve. You will receive $91.90 within 2 weeks of the sale and a further $5.00 180 days after the sale. >>> Stacy.Young@sfcommerce.com 04/08/03 12:02PM >>> Hi Dan, You don't require a merchant account with us...and we have a CF toolkit. http://www.sfcommerce.com FAQ https://payment.firepay.com/surefire/ccs/reg/faq.jsp Sign-Up https://payment.firepay.com/surefire/ccs/reg/register.jsp?VERSION=1.0&CU RRENCY=USD,CAD If you need more info feel free to drop me a line... Additional benefit from PayPal: A customer who does not have a free PayPal account gets $5.00 credited to their account when signing up via your web site, and you also get a $5.00 referral fee from PayPal.  Paypal also pays interest on funds left in your account. PayPal handles all credit cards, debit cards, and e-checks as well. There is no chargeback reserve on PayPal, because each transaction is verified by PayPal before it is completed. I have used PayPal for three years, and have never had a chargeback. ===================================== Douglas White group Manager mailto:doug@samcfug.org http://www.samcfug.org ===================================== | Considering SureFire vs PayPal: | | SureFire: | 1. Thanks everybody for your input. I am looking at all of them, but on PayPal, I do not see an account option where I can maintain the pruduct inventory and cart, and then just link to the payment processor's page to enter CC info. It sounds like you'll want the Instant Payment Notification (IPN) option. That's a fair assessment. We're positioned as a wholesaler which means the larger volume you have, the less you pay. As for brands we process, Visa, MC, Amex, Discover, eChecks across North America and also debit cards across Europe. Amex and Discover are not advertised as options because you require your own merchant account for those brands. Typically, if you expect low volume we would not be the best choice....on the other hand if you expect a fair to large volume, we're tough to beat. Both from price and performance aspects because your rates are priced accordingly. Add to that one of the best automated fraud screening facilities in the biz. Cheers! > There is no chargeback reserve on PayPal, because each transaction is verified by PayPal before it is completed. Our client base is typically large volume, higher risk transactions which accounts for the advertised reserve...but it varies based on your line of business. Transactions are "scrubbed" through real-time fraud screening process to prevent chargebacks. One of our strongest features in comparison to our competitors. As I mentioned earlier, if you're a low volume merchant we are not the cheapest option...but for medium to high volume Merchants, our price and performance is tough to beat. :) -Stace Additional benefit from PayPal: A customer who does not have a free PayPal account gets $5.00 credited to their account when signing up via your web site, and you also get a $5.00 referral fee from PayPal.  Paypal also pays interest on funds left in your account. While we're on the subject of Payment Processing...  Can people make recommendations for the best combination of merchant account and payment processor? I'm probably going to go with a Wells Fargo merchant account and Verisign's Payflow but would like to consider other low cost options that are fairly easy to set up. thanks for any info, -B
