I was hoping someone could shed a little more light on the subject. Maybe compile all known facts and rumors. Here is a short article on infoWorld titled "Interview: Macromedia CEO discusses upcoming Royale tool". Yet they ask only one question about Royale and don't get much of an answer. http://www.infoworld.com/article/03/05/08/HNburgessint_1.html Burgess also touches briefly on it during the recent Macromedia 4th Quarter report. Being that it's due to come out within about 6 months, there has got to be some more info about it. And for cf-talk argument # 4: IDGNS: And now to wrap up with a question pundits and analysts like to ask companies with cutting-edge technology: When is Microsoft going to acquire you? Burgess: We're good partners; we're not up for sale. There are millions of customers out there who want us to remain independent. So from what Mike says here "He showed a Flash based input form with multiple sections. He then showed the code used to build it, which was written entirely in XML. Not only was the entire Flash application created from the XML file, but so was all of the databinding (SOAP Based), ActionScript and StyleSheets (yes, Cascading Style Sheets)." This means it'll be easiy to hook it to CF with the cfxml tag. (Which is fast becoming my favorite new tag) Candace K. Plus, it's an open standard as opposed to Flash. Could someone explain the difference? It's touched on in Chamber's Blog but not explicit enough for me . . . Thanks From Mike Chamber's Blog... http://www.markme.com/mesh/archives/001970.cfm ----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more ----- Ah! I blogged this same idea a few weeks ago. I don't know, but I have a sneaky feeling that one will write a SVG xml file and then it will be dynamically generate into Flash's code base. So instead of requiring a SVG plug-in you will only require a flash plugin. I'm not clear how this is different than SVG--vector-based graphics created from XML files that are also capable of being animated . . . Plus, it's an open standard as opposed to Flash. Thanks >From Mike Chamber's Blog... http://www.markme.com/mesh/archives/001970.cfm ----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more ----- The thing to keep in mind is that Macromedia is interested in enabling Rich Internet Application development, not simply animation (we've got that pretty well covered), so there is a lot more involved than just describing vector based graphics in XML. There are two things that are tricky about RIAs: 1. Initially constructing them. 2. Exchanging data between them and the server once they are built. Flash and Flash Remoting address these issues in one way today. Royale will address them in a new way in the not-so-distant future. If you are familiar with Flash and you like the graphical nature of the Flash authoring tool, FR is great, and you're all set. If you are primarily a programmer and feel uncomfortable with a visual/graphical tool like Flash, you will like what you see with Royale. As Rob says, "It's essentially Flash for programmers." SVG is pretty limited in functionality compared to Flash. Not that you can't do very cool things with it, for instance, whenever I need to make graphs on the fly with only a few thousand points SVG is my first choice. But none of the RIA stuff is in SVG. If I have to construct an *application* that integrates with a database bakend (for instance to do time management [1]), SVG is out of the question. So from my understanding, it isn't really conceptually different, you just get all the Flash functionality that SVG doesn't have, and undoubtedly it will integrate nicely with the rest of the products from Macromedia.
