----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more ----- There are two points worth raising here. First, this is essentially the same as VMware, not different. There are several versions of VMware, two of which are designed specifically for server consolidation. One version of VMware doesn't even require a host OS - it provides its own OS. Second, and much more importantly, from a licensing perspective this is not cheaper than running a bunch of dedicated servers. You do have to purchase licenses for the virtual OS, unless it's a free OS like Linux or FreeBSD. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/techinfo/overview/virtualization. mspx Dave Watts, CTO, Fig Leaf Software http://www.figleaf.com/ voice: (202) 797-5496 fax: (202) 797-5444

> So you can host Windows and Linux on the same machine? Yes, you can put nearly any x86-compatible OS in a virtual machine. Dave Watts, CTO, Fig Leaf Software http://www.figleaf.com/ voice: (202) 797-5496 fax: (202) 797-5444

> This is something I've been thinking about recently. Does > anyone actually use VMWARE/virtual PC for hosting > applications on the same server but multiple Operating > systems? There are plenty of people doing this, although I don't know how common it is in the web hosting business. But I think that, in general, server consolidation through virtualization is going to be a big thing.
