Another project has come up that needs a threaded discussions board. I've implemented the old Allaire Forums a few times, but I hope to never see that hideous gorgon again. Can anyone recommend a commercial or free package? The software must have open source, though, because modifications to functionality and UI are likely. I have heard some good things about the free PHP packages that are out there, but there's already pressure on this project to limit the number of new (ie, risky) technologies to be employed, and I'd be going too far out on a limb to use an environment other than CF. Also, A MachII architecture would win a package extra points, but it's not strictly necessary. Also, if anyone would like to drive any verbal swords into the heart of the beast that was Allaire Forums, I could use (a laugh, as well as) more ammunition in my formal denouncement of it. Thanks, Jamie

>Can anyone recommend a commercial or free package? The software must >have open source, though, because modifications to functionality and >UI are likely. Jamie, What's more important to you: fleshed-out admin stuff, or user-facing features? I've thought about licensing the app underneath JournURL off-and-on over the last year or so, given that it does things no other CF-based community app does. (Or most non-CF-based apps, for that matter.) But since I never really intended the admin tools to be used by anyone but me, that part of the interface is *extremely* ragged, making me reluctant to try and release it. If you're interested, though, drop by and kick the tires of the hosted version. -- Roger Benningfield work: http://journurl.com/ blog: http://admin.support.journurl.com/

----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more ----- Of utmost importance to the project leader is the criterion that the chosen system be "proven" (i.e., deployed successfully by many others). Therefore, while your system is likely very good, it would be viewed as having a limited track record. This would be an insurmountable hurdle. Thanks very much for the response, though. Jamie

I've used FuseTalk in a few different solutions. It is by far one of the most advanced CF solutions I have seen. Macromedia uses FuseTalk on their web site. You can get information at www.fusetalk.com -Nick ----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more -----

Thanks for the link. I have more than a hunch that that's going to be too expensive, though. I'll keep this in mind as the Rolls Royce of CF solutions, and in the meantime, can anyone suggest a Daihatsu of a CF solution (hundreds of dollars, rather than thousands) that you've used? Thanks, Jamie ----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more -----

Unfortunately, none of our projects is PHP, so that would be too much risk for this already agressive deadline we've set. However, I have heard of PHPBB before, and all the buzz I've read is quite good. Thanks, Jamie ----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more -----

If I were fusetalk, I'd probably remove the advertising from the Macromedia forums.  It's just plain painful to try to use them.....If you want to see what it's like to be on dialup still, visit the forums... -- Marlon Moyer, Sr. Internet Developer American Contractors Insurance Group phone: 972.687.9445 fax: 972.687.0607 mailto:mmoyer@acig.com www.acig.com ----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more ----- the > most advanced CF solutions I have seen. Oh yeah, and the MM forums are the ones that I can only post to on alternating Tuesdays, if I'm lucky. The rest of the time, the login fails.
