Don't forget the gmail popper.... "Pop Goes the Gmail is a program that sits between the http://gmail.com web server and your email client, converting messages from web format into POP3 format that a program such as Outlook Express or Thunderbird can understand? http://jaybe.org/downloads.htm Michael T. yeah, I blogged about that just before (www.beynon.org.uk) but if you look at the gmail feature list they're working on that have POP3 as 'we're working on it' jb. ----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more -----

Outside of archival, why would you want to use outlook? so that you dont have to switch between outlook and the browser all day long, i cant get my exchange email through my gmail web interface, but then again, i prefer it this way, my list emails are here on gmail, and my WORK email, the only email that matters is in outlook. :) tw ----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more -----

I still love Outlook and see plenty of reasons to use it over Gmail. You can integrate Outlook with Gmail and not have to "switch between Outlook and a Browser all day" (and, actually, this is one of the reasons I like Outlook!) Just create a new folder someplace (I've only done this with personal folders, but I see no reason that it wouldn't work with system folders as well) and call it "Gmail".  Then right click the folder and choose "properties".  Now select the "Home Page" tab.  Check the "Show home page by default for this folder" and enter http://gmail.google.com <http://gmail.google.com/>;  into the address.  Then press "OK" and you're set. When you select that folder in Outlook you'll now see Gmail.  Log in (selecting "don't ask me for my password for 2 weeks" if you like). You can, of course, also do this for any other web-based email services or just for sites that you visit daily or that might affect your schedule (like the corporate cafeteria menu.) You don't get any real integration with the sites, but it is slightly easier to move around between web and Exchange based email. GMail won't replace Outlook for me any time soon.  No integration with my Handheld PC, no scheduling, very weak contact management, no task or notes management, etc  I love it, but it's just not even close to a replacement technology unless you use Outlook for email and  only email - and if that were the case why would you be using Outlook in the first place? I'm not sure why it works again (perhaps Gmail is working around it) but Outlook can have it own security settings apart from IE.  Got to "Tools", "Options" and the "Security" tab and you'll be able to set the security zone that Outlook can use.  Mine currently works on "Restricted", but you might try "Internet" (just for a minute!) to see if that's the problem. I've also had problems with Norton Internet Security adding it's own filters over email - if you're using a client-side firewall you might want to check that out. Heck, I use Outlook mainly for its calendar and synching to my PDA. Recently I have tried to use it for email but it still does not work as nice as Outlook Express does for IMAP based email.  It would be interesting to see if Gmail turned more into an Outlook or Yahoo with its calendar and so on. > GMail won't replace Outlook for me any time soon.  No integration with my > Handheld PC, no scheduling, very weak contact management, no task or notes > management, etc  I love it, but it's just not even close to a replacement > technology unless you use Outlook for email and  only email - and if that > were the case why would you be using Outlook in the first place?

I would like it for the reasons already stated and also because I sometimes do not care for the formating the emails take when viewing them through the gmail web interface. > Outside of archival, why would you want to use outlook? Well - I'm an Outlook fan, but I'm not sure I agree with that. I consider it Microsoft's fault simply because they built stronger security into the product but SHIPPED it with little to now security enabled. Dumbasses making everybody hate my favorite email client.  ;^) As an aside if you really hate Outlook, try Lotus Notes for a while (something I'm being forced to do at work) - you'll have a whole new appreciation of Outlook in just a little while.  ;^) Jim Davis   _____ Sent: Friday, August 20, 2004 10:55 AM To: CF-Talk Subject: RE: for all you gmail users > I am not sure about loving outlook (oh fount of all virus > intrusions!) Yup. To be clearer (heck - I always make more sense on the second pass!) - Outlook's reputation was gained on the insecure previous releases.  Had MS shipped Outlook 2000 as they shipped 2003 then we might not have heard nearly as many negative comments. 2003, out of the box, seems to be a very stable, secure release in my experience. > ....cut off for one and for another I get > "Unable to Display this folder" any ideas anyone? I am using outlook 2002 On my Tablet PC, I get that too (Outlook 2003, XP Pro SP2) At work, (Outlook 2003, XP Pro SP1) I can load the site initially, but when I go back to it I get a message about requiring cookies. I click the "try again" links that gmail provides, and that works. I can't find anywhere to change the security level of pages... I added gmail to the "trusted sites" list but that had no effect on either machine. Wierd! -- Kay Smoljak http://kay.smoljak.com/

----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more ----- By default, Outlook 2003 treats all content as "Restricted Zone" content, I think, so adding something to "Trusted Sites" won't affect it. Unfortunately, I don't have a solution for you, as I wouldn't recommend weakening Outlook 2003's default security configuration.
