As we al lknow its next-to useless trying to find an up-to-date course on ColdFusion at a tertiary educational institution. So I applaud Ray's initiative. And with Ray's amazing knowledge and wisdom it's bound to be a wonderful thing. I like the whole notion of "cookbook". I've seen other cookbooks in other disciplines (one of my favourites a few years ago when i was tinkering with solder and wire and transistors etc was a electronics cookbook) But how will this be different to easycfm.com and communitymx.com? Itn't it just duplicating what's already done? (incidentally I took a look around communitymx.com while they had a open house last week - most impressive. Far more wonderful content than I ever imagined was in there.) Cheers Mike Kear Windsor, NSW, Australia Certified Advanced ColdFusion Developer AFP Webworks http://afpwebworks.com ColdFusion, PHP, ASP, ASP.NET hosting from AUD$15/month I think the difference will be in how the information is setup. It is my understanding that easycfm and communitymx are more general, like CFDJ. My idea for the cookbook is to be a bit more particular. I.e., every "article" is simply a question and an answer. So for example, "How do I email a form to myself?" So the site may not end up terribly different, but hey - resources are resouces. :) ----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more ----- Quite so, Ray! Every resource is valuable. I am always hunting up resources I've read about. I'll see a hint or a tip someone will post somewhere, and I'll say to myself "that will be useful for me one day," or "I'll be able to use that when I come to redevelop X site". The problem is always that it's just like my workshop. When I come to fix the broken hinge on the back door, I can never remember where I saw that spare hinge five months ago and put it somewhere saying to myself "That'll come in handy one day". Women these days hate cooking and generally see it as a chore for their lazy husbands who wont get off their fat asses and do anything for themselves. Rick > :) > > Not showoff. Amatuer gourmet. > Ray, This does sound like a great idea. I can't claim to be expert enough to be writing any chef entries, but I am a PITA proofreader (folks never like me because I actually find all the errors--grin), and as a medium-level CFer, I know enough to be a sample user of the thing. So, I'd love to help out in that capacity if possible. I guess that means that I am volunteering to be a sous-chef, or maybe potwasher. As for specific ideas: 1) There are a lot of free resources out there that are fantastically useful on various other topics branching away from ColdFusion. For example, sites that give SQL tutorials, etc. When you get down to certain levels of detail in addressing topics, you could have links off to such sites, perhaps. 2) Examples examples examples! Well-written explanations are great, but the more novice you are, the more examples you need to have it make sense, I think. HTH, Matthieu I'd like to announce the creation of a ColdFusion Cookbook. This is gonna prove to be really useful! Thanks, Will Will you be adding a way to post comments on things put up? One of the things I noticed that bit a developer in my group was the mentioning of Val() on this one: http://www.coldfusioncookbook.com/entry/15/You-need-to-test-a-string-to-see-if-it-is-a-valid-numeric-value . If the numeric number is rather large Val() will return the number in scientific notation. I do not have a pre CFMX box to test it on, but from what I remember the developer had always done something along those lines prior to CFMX to get a number then it started to bomb out in MX. Of course it is way past my bed time so I might be remembering the details wrong on that one. My question more of general curiosity on the design and the whole Val() stuff was just an attempt at maybe an example of where something could be put in by a person. Aaraon - comments is planned. Just not complete. I'm most of the way done with it. > Will you be adding a way to post comments on things put up? FYI - I added the Firefox RSS doohicky in the header so you can auto-subscribe from Firefox. The picture - I have no idea. I got the design from Open Source Web Design (oswd.org). To be honest, I couldn't design my way out of a hand bag. > Looks great Ray. Love the RSS feed and suggested search criteria. Looks great and simple to use...I like the idea of comments. What are your thoughts about allowing people to register and setup their own gateway page, or perhaps, as Michael has done for HOF, allow users to tag entries they think are especially useful to them? Rick ----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more ----- Not too sure. I typically find that for sites like this - most people don't bother to register. How many people who use CFLib actually register? (Well, I do have 4k people on my email list. Anyone wanna buy an ad? ;) I'll consider it. > Man...I'm disappointed Ray...searched, but couldn't find > anything on "tater tots"... ;o) > > (Sorry, couldn't help it...) > -- ======================================================================= Raymond Camden, Director of Development for Mindseye, Inc (www.mindseye.com) Member of Team Macromedia (http://www.macromedia.com/go/teammacromedia) Email : jedimaster@mindseye.com Blog : ray.camdenfamily.com Yahoo IM : cfjedimaster "My ally is the Force, and a powerful ally it is." - Yoda I don't know about CFLib...never used it. The question would be what benefit would their be to registering...I would certainly like to receive an email everytime an entry is made. I can glance over the email and delete it or go to the site to flag it as important to me. And if registration gave me a way to build a "personal" library from the entries...yes, I would register...absolutely. I would probably rarely visit the site if the site doesn't reach out to me through email...I think that's key to any site's success today. I'm just always looking for ways to make content more useful and accessible to site users... ----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more ----- I'd agree with Rick here...those all sound like excellent ideas. Bobby Hartsfield http://acoderslife.com Hi, Bobby... See my reply to Ray conerning the RSS... Rick ----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more ----- On the topic of RSS, after going through a few readers that were not so great (Google's reader is pretty lame btw), I found a nice one (free) called Rocketinfo that is easy to sign up for and use. It comes with several dozen feeds built in as well. Here's the link. http://reader.rocketinfo.com/desktop/ -- Josh Nathanson ----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more ----- I hear you on the "reach out" part. Do note that there is an RSS feed. Would a simple "Enter email addy here to subscribe" be enough? I could then send email once a week, like CFLib. You've _never_ been to CFLib???? :) Can I ask why? ----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more ----- I've got RSS setup and Pluck installed, but after a month, I've never even bothered to look at it again...just not enough "to the point" material and just another information interface to have to deal with. So far, I haven't gotten much out of RSS...but that may just be me... My primary interface for info is email...I'm in it all day everyday with clients, CF-Talk, etc., and having the info come there is much better for me...consolidation of sources takes less time for me to parse information. "Enter email..." would be perfect. However, I don't like emails that address more than one specific point at a time. I would much rather have the topics come to me with the title and description *as they are entered* than have one email come to me with 15 different topics to have to deal with...same way I prefer getting a continuous stream of CF-Talk rather than a digest...I would have to parse through everything in the digest to see if there was anything of value or interest to me. With constant streams of single topic emails, I can tell just by looking at the subject line whether to glance at the preview pane or quickly hit the delete key. Rick ----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more ----- (http://www.macromedia.com/go/teammacromedia) ----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more ----- Oh...I missed your question about CFLib... I rarely use tags created by others...only twice have I done that since I started coding CF...at first it was out of ignorance and preferring to cook up my own solutions so I understood them well. Currently, however, the content on CFLib is irrelavent to me...it's for CF 5 and MX...I'm *still* using 4.5.2! 4.5.2 still does everything I need and when CF shifted to a Java-based (or however you would now describe it) the talk on CF-Talk got way beyond me really quickly, since I know nothing much of Java. And the problems discussed were such that I couldn't relate to them and it scared me off from upgrading. But the main thing is, again, 4.5.2 will do whatever I've asked of it so far, runs flawlesslly...so "If it ain't broke..." ----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more ----- (http://www.macromedia.com/go/teammacromedia) ----- Excess quoted text cut - see Original Post for more ----- Still a work in progress but a fantastic beginning. Great work as always Ray, and thank you for everything you do for the CF community. A2 > But the main thing is, again, 4.5.2 will do whatever I've > asked of it so far, runs flawlesslly...so "If it ain't broke..." 4.5.2 may not be broke, but MX 7 has a ton of productivity improving enhancements. And the Java stuff is over-rated, I've never touched the Java side of MX myself. I think the best thing that Java brings to CF is it is easy for Macrobe to port CF to other platforms. -------------- This transmission may contain information that is privileged, confidential and/or exempt from disclosure under applicable law. I'm sure there are light years of improvement in features and productivity between 4.5.2 and MX 7...and when I come upon a business requirement that forces me to spend the app. $650 to upgrade, I will...but until then, I have no need. I'm just a one-man shop, bulding small websites and apps for customers...I and my clients don't have the need for speed that many of the larger websites and corporate intranets would have. I also know that every upgrade I've ever performed with major production software, from video production to Cold Fusion programming and serving, has had issues that have brought servers for customers to a halt and caused me to have to spend time sorting out issues. Not to mention all the new "tricks of the trade" I'd have to learn, such as CFC's... I'd just as soon avoid that as long as possible. I do have a spare server right now that I could test on...but I'm too busy building sites and apps right now to bother with it. Perhaps soon I'll do some testing on a development server. What concerns me a lot more as a self-employed site and app builder is Microsoft's new OfficeLive or whatever the online version of MS Office is called...I see where they're going to offer one-stop shopping, including business websites as part of the package...that could really hurt me a lot more than not upgrading to MX 7...
