Verity writing stuff to my text files
Author: John Drake

Are they always the same number of lines - like 7?
If they do come back and you don't want to fool with permissions - I'd just strip
the last 7 lines before you display the story.
Not elegant but a quick band aid.

Thanks for all your advice, Dave.
I refreshed my articles collection today after uploading backup versions of the
text files (hurray, I had them) and it didn't add that text to them.. so looks
like, for now at least, it has stopped. Possibly I did something funny in a
cfindex a while back when I was reconfiguring these collections. Strange.
If it happens again I'll look into that permissions thing - although I need the
CF user to be able to write to them if ever we edit our articles, so I'll have to
make sure verity and cf are using different users. Oh boy.
Thanks again,
Scott

Every process runs with some set of credentials. If Verity is running
as a service, the user account can be found in the Services control
panel. If it's running as an application, the user account will be
that of the user or service which launched the application.
If you're using CF 5, you could be using either Verity VDK (an
application) or K2 (a service). If you're using VDK, which I believe
is the default, it's launched by CF, so whatever user account CF is
using is the one in question.

No, unfortunately I've never seen that behavior before. Unfortunately,
also, I doubt that Adobe will provide much useful support on this
problem, since CF 5 is almost certainly no longer supported. That's
why I suggested the rights thing - that'll let you address the
symptoms at least. You could also just mark the files read-only I
guess.

The process must be running as some user or other...

I can't seem to find anything about verity having a user account. Can you point
me in the right direction? I'm assuming this is a server level security thing -
which I don't really have access to as our server is hosted halfway around the
world.
Do you, Dave, or anyone have any idea why this has happened or how to keep it
from happening again? Setting write permissions is sort of just fixing the
symptoms rather than the disease. I am now uploading all my article text files in
order to remove this text.. hope it doesn't happen again. (but if it does I'll

User account that verity is using?? I have no idea. Does verity have a user
account? OK, I guess I'll look into that. It's funny that I can't find anyone
else having this problem.
Cheers

I don't know. Could you just make the files non-writeable for the user
account that Verity is using?

Yes, this is how I originally did it. However the directory also includes a
template file which I don't want indexed. The other problem was that I couldn't
have a cf_custom1 or 2 when indexing via the path - this made displaying the
results more difficult AND linking them with the index on the info in the
database very difficult. Do you think this has something to do with this writing
problem?

This doesn't really address your question directly, but why aren't you
just indexing the directory, instead of indexing the individual files?

Hello,
Our site uses a folder of text files to store articles. When someone goes to an
article page, the article's title etc is looked up in the database while the main
body of the article is stored in a text file. The source name of the file is also
in the database, so we merely call that text file using cfinclude
The problem: I've recently included these text files in a search collection. The
collection is generated using a cfloop over a cfindex type="file".. Anyway, I've
noticed now that verity has stuck a bunch of code at the bottom of all my txt
files! Eg:
VDKVGWKEY: D:\\WINNT\\TEMP\\CFI238A.tmp
CF_KEY:D:\\WINNT\\TEMP\\CFI238A.tmp
CF_TITLE:Elephants
CF_URL:fee00023.txt
CF_CUSTOM1:
CF_CUSTOM2:
<<EOD>>
So now this is showing up at the bottom of all my articles! Not cool!
Can anyone tell me how I stop this? I'm on coldfusion 5
Thanks
