I read through MS site and comparison charts.  We currently have a server running MS SQL Server 2000 Standard and were going to be upgrading.  Looking at the differences in pricing for 2008 Standard and Web editions the Web edition is an attractive way to go.  The database supports some sites and applications and none of the business or analysis tools are used. Anyone have any real world experience with Web Edition compared to Standard to be able to comment on performance between the two?

The core engine is the same between editions, as far as I understand it, just limited in the number of CPU cores and/or memory it can use, the maximum size of the databases, the lack of some of the business tools and features, and other things like being a master for replication.  I have some single-server websites that use MS-SQL 2008 Express as a back-end and it performs just as well if not better than SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition did. -Justin

Justin: If your databases are less than 10 gig in size and will remain that way for a while, and you don't need replication and some other enterprise features take a look at SQL Server Express.  The price is really good, free.
